Getting Started With Discernment

Why you might feel called to discern a vocation as a Benedictine monk

Transitus of St. BenedictMany men feel called to live in a way that is different from what our culture has to offer. Some desire to conform their lives more closely to Christ. They long for truth and beauty and ultimately discover that their hearts are seeking to be more fully united with God.

If you sense that the Holy Spirit is leading you to explore monastic life, then I invite you to consider if God is calling you to Conception Abbey. We are a Benedictine monastery of fifty-five monks located in Northwest Missouri that faithfully lives out the Rule of Saint Benedict and a balanced life of prayer and work.

We invite men who are healthy, joyful, generous with their talents, desire to live in community, and most importantly, men who desire holiness to explore our monastery more closely.

Founded in 1873, the monks of Conception Abbey have responded to the needs of the Church through a variety of ministries, but especially through the chanting of the Divine Office five times a day and the celebration of the Eucharist daily. You might want to take an opportunity to read our vocation magazine, Listen my Son to learn more about the monks of Conception Abbey.

There is a great need for courageous men to lay down their lives in imitation of Jesus Christ and humbly follow in the monastic way of life. It is a life of conversion, but one that leads to a deep, abiding peace and communion with God.

If you believe that God might be calling you to monastic life, I invite you to explore the process further by contacting me, the Vocation Director of Conception Abbey. Also, you I want to invite you to attend one of our regular Monastic Experience Retreat weekends to visit our Abbey and meet other young men considering monastic life. I realize that many men can be fearful in taking the first step to making contact with a monastic community, but I assure you that I am eager to journey with you and help you in your discernment.

Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Paul Sheller, OSB
