Information regarding coronavirus, COVID-19

*Revised 08/01/2020

As the community of Conception Abbey continues to cautiously navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, the following changes will be made with the health and safety of the entire Conception community in mind. Please check the website regularly for updates, as situations may change quickly due to the nature of this pandemic.

  • The Conception campus is now accepting planned guests to the Abbey Guest Center and visitors to campus.
    • We ask that anyone wishing to visit someone on campus, tour, eat a meal, or attend a retreat, call the Abbey Guest Center at 660.944.2809 prior to arrival. The Abbey Guest Center will provide instructions to planned guests.
    • Anyone who arrives without prior instructions should enter through St. Raphael Welcome Center. Safety protocols and contact tracing will occur at this time.
  • Everyone is required to wear masks on campus in public spaces. This includes visitors, guests, monks, employees, seminarians, vendors, contracted services, etc.
  • Those who attend Mass or prayer will enter and exit through the west door of St. Joseph Hall (between St. Raphael Hall and the Basilica).
    • The Mass protocols provided by our local diocese, Kansas City-St. Joseph, will be followed.
    • Masks must be worn anytime a person is moving, i.e., entrance, exit, communion. Hand sanitizer will be available.
    • The exterior Basilica doors will remain locked to minimize points of entrance and exit.
  • Seminarians will arrive in mid-August for the beginning of the fall semester and will remain on campus for the duration of the semester. Large events will be held virtually as possible.
  • Employees and monks have returned to their on-campus work under new safety protocols to minimize the chances of spreading COVID-19.
  • The St. John Paul II Recreation Center on campus will remain closed to the public until further notice.
  • The 2020 Conception Seminary Alumni Reunion and Partnering for Future Priests Fundraising event will be held virtually. Contact events@conception.edu for more information.

There are many ways in which the monastic community and the mission of Conception Abbey and Seminary College will continue through these uncertain times. The monks will still gather for their primary vocation of prayer six times a day in the Abbey Basilica. Daily Mass, Lauds, Vespers, and Compline will be streamed online at www.conceptionabbey.org/live.

We continue to share the Christian faith through the creation and distribution of Christian greeting cards, and Catholic gifts from The Printery House at Conception through online orders, which can be made by visiting www.printeryhouse.org or over the phone at 1-800-322-2737.

Abbot Benedict Neenan, OSB, in an address to the entire Conception community, spoke of this time as an opportunity to focus on the constants in our lives. “The constant values to be preserved and expressed are unity of identity and purpose; respect for the life, safety and health of one another and service to Christ and his Church in the ministries we believe he has commissioned us to carry out.”

Our prayers are with all those affected by this pandemic and with the communities and businesses around the world taking extreme measures to slow the spread of the virus. We want to thank all of our friends and benefactors whose prayers and support allow the continuation of our work.
