Altar Dedicated, Church Renewed

On August 9th, Bishop James Johnston celebrated the dedication of the new altar at St. Columba Catholic Church in nearby Conception Junction. This celebration was the first liturgy celebrated in the renewed church.

The renovation project began in early January and was completed by the end of July. The project was guided by the Church Renovation Committee, composed of ten members of the parish along with the pastor. Many had looked forward to the renewal of the church. The parish gave overwhelming support to the project. The renewal consisted of new pews, replacement of wood paneling with drywall and paint, enhancements to the sanctuary, new flooring, new ceiling tiles, new sanctuary furniture (altar, ambo, tabernacle stand, font), improved lighting, and a new sound system. LaTona Architects of Kansas City aided the planning and development of the design. Members of the parish stepped up for almost all of the contracting and labor. The Church Committee worked well together in the design and many details that contributed to the final result.

The project had the full support of the members from the beginning, and parishioners are very pleased with the results. This will serve the parish for many years to come.

St. Columba’s Church was originally completed and dedicated in October of 1967, a new church for the combined parishes established in 1962. This year marks the 165th year since the establishment of the first church in the area, in 1860, a simple chapel named for St. Columba. Monk-priests of Conception Abbey have served the Catholic community of the area since 1873.
