Dear friends of Conception Abbey,
As Christians and Benedictines, the monks of Conception Abbey strongly condemn any abuse of persons-children, young people, or adults-no matter where it occurs. All persons deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Such abuse is particularly heinous when the perpetrator is associated with the Church, whether as clergy member or auxiliary personnel. Conception Abbey is committed to protecting every person served by the works and ministries of the Abbey.
In common with other institutions of Consecrated Life, the monks of Conception Abbey are committed to providing a safe and protective environment for children, young people and adults, and are working to ensure such an environment. We share the anguish and sadness expressed by so many over instances of sexual abuse of minors perpetrated by diocesan priests, by religious priests or by religious brothers. We know that for those who have experienced the betrayal of sexual abuse, the wounds are deep and the scars may last forever. We know that many in the Church who have looked to the clergy as servant leaders of the gospel have also experienced a great sense of loss and betrayal. Trust and confidence can be restored only over time, and with deliberate attention to healing the pain while assuring a safe and healthy environment for all who work, serve, minister and worship in the Church.
All members of the monastic community of Conception Abbey, as well as all employees, volunteers and seminarians, are required to adhere to the Abbey's Program of Protection for Children and Other Vulnerable Persons. This Program is in force throughout Conception Abbey, and is published here for the information of our friends and interested persons.
The Program of Protection for Children and Other Vulnerable Persons in intended to help ensure a safe environment for children, young people and adults at Conception Abbey. It seeks to foster Catholic moral values and attitudes among monks, employees, volunteers and seminarians. All who live and work at Conception Abbey are expected to understand the goals and requirements of the Program and to implement them faithfully in their ministries.
If you are aware of instances of abuse, past or present, we encourage you to report what you know to Fr. Patrick Caveglia, O.S.B., coordinator of our Program. He can be reached at 660-944-2988 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We promise that we will respond quickly.
We are grateful for your friendship and prayerful support. May God's grace guide us all and heal those who have been affected and have suffered the wounds of sexual abuse.
Sincerely in Christ.
Right Rev. Gregory J. Polan, O.S.B.
Abbot -Chancellor
