Printery House: A message rooted in the Gospel

Fr. Peter UllrichThe printing apostolate of the monks of Conception Abbey dates back to the 1930s when the community began publishing Altar & Home. This was a small pamphlet meant to help readers connect their worship at church to family life at home. From 1934 to 1960 the young monks (clerics, as they were called in those years) took on this project: writing articles, doing artwork, mailing and even bookkeeping. This grew into what was called the Liturgical Pocket Missal, a kind of missalette with articles on the liturgy, published from 1960 to 1963.

In time, the printing apostolate evolved to include the printing of quality Christmas cards and other Christian greeting cards, promoting good liturgical art. This capsule of its early history shows that, from the start, printing at Conception has always been connected to sharing faith and promoting a good understanding of the liturgy. The printing work of the community has always been seen as an apostolate, a ministry, given to sharing the Good News.

From these roots, the mission of The Printery House today is “to proclaim the Gospel & share the Christian faith through the creation and distribution of printed products & contemporary religious art.” This principle guides the development of designs and the careful crafting of messages and texts on greeting cards, as well as the selection of gifts that we offer to our customers. Printery House Christmas cards are always clearly religious. You’ll not find snowmen nor Santas, but rather tasteful representations of the Christmas mysteries linked to texts that flow from the heart of Christmas, namely God’s love for the human family. Occasional cards too all have Scripture verses tied to the specific caption. Whether for birthday, get well, thank you or other captions, the message of the Gospel is reflected in carefully chosen texts complementing tasteful designs.
