NWMSU students visit Conception

This October, a group of about 30 Northwest Missouri State University students visited Conception Abbey for a first hand history lesson from Conception Abbey’s own Br. Thomas Sullivan. The students were from a medieval art history class, taught by Professor Martha Breckenridge. During their stay, Br. Thomas gave them presentations on the exemplary collection of Beuronese murals in the abbey basilica and the Madonna and child statue that sits in the apse, as well as a first hand look at some of the folio pages from the library’s rare book room.
Br. Thomas is an accomplished scholar, historian, and author. He received his doctorate in history from the University of Wisconsin ('82), and a M.A. in library science from the University of Missouri at Columbia('96). He currently serves as Conception's head librarian and continues his long tenure as a Professor of History and Humanities.

Br. Thomas has published yet another scholarly work featured by Brill: his work deals with theological quodlibeta, records of special disputations held before Christmas and Easter ca. 1230-1330, mostly at the University of Paris, in which audience members asked the great masters of theology the questions for debate, questions de quolibet, “about anything.” These writings are crucial for our knowledge of the history of topics in metaphysics and natural philosophy.
This research serves medieval studies, especially intellectual history.
