Priests and Seminarians Appreciation Day

This year, the annual Priests and Seminarians Appreciation Day yet again raised the bar from the previous year. It is a constantly expanding and evolving event, and the breadth of its current state is truly remarkable. Now in its 16th year, the event includes a golf tournament, Texas Hold ‘Em tournament, barbeque dinner, and an evening awards ceremony at which a staggering number of gifts are given away.

It is hard to put a final dollar amount on what the Priests and Seminarians Appreciation Day brings in, not only because of the inevitable loose ends that need to be tied up afterwards, but also because there is no price tag on the hard work done by the people who organize the event. A portion of the money raised always goes to Conception Seminary College, and while that figure is not yet in, there is no doubt that the main point of the event was accomplished: to provide a great day for the seminarians and priests.

Apart from the money that will come to Conception, the 44 seminarians of the two Kansas City dioceses each received a $250 check. This generosity is only the tip of the iceberg though: other gifts given away to priests and religious included 57 black suits (MSRP of $895), GPS systems, iPod Nanos, digital cameras, gift cards to Quik Trip, Border’s Bookstore, Wal-Mart, and various others.

The event continues to draw quite the crowd. In addition to the seminarians, this year there were 93 priests and 3 bishops which, together with the throng of lay faithful, made for a capacity crowd at St. Thomas More Parish hall. The day truly does exemplify the stewardship and gratitude of the faithful as they give of themselves in service of the Church and say “thanks” to our priests and seminarians.
