Abbey Footnotes

Fr. Benedict Neenan served as a "Busy Students' Retreat" director for college students at the Newman Center of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa November 4 - 8. From December 2-7, he took part in the Monastic Visitation of the Benedictine Community of Mount Angel in Oregon. He will attend the annual convention of the American Catholic Historical Society in Washington, DC from January 2 - 6.

Fr. Patrick Caveglia preached a retreat to priests of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and Diocese of Sioux City in October at North American Martyrs Retreat house in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The theme was the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew. He also chaired a meeting of the Congregation Finance Committee over the first weekend in December. Their meeting was at St. Benedict's Abbey, Benet Lake, Wisconsin. The committee reviews financial statements from monasteries in the Swiss-American Benedictine Congregation and prepares commendations and questions for use by visitators during visitations.

Br. Pachomius Meade assisted Br. Claude Lane, OSB on a 8ft X 7ft mural-icon for the monastic dining room at Mount Angel Abbey, where I am taking theological studies. The icon depicts the Four Blesseds of Engelberg (from right to left: Berchtold, Frowin, Conrad, and Adelhelm) on the occasion of Mount Angel's 125th anniversary of foundation on Oct. 30, 2007.

In October, Fr. Adam Ryan preached a day of recollection at St. Augustin Parish in Des Moines, Iowa. In early November, he conducted a staff workshop and participated in a speaker series for A Simple House, a ministry in Washington, D.C. that serves the poor and underprivileged in Anacostia. In early Advent, he travelled to Granger, Iowa where alumnus Fr. Gene Koch is pastor to preach a weekend of recollection.

On November 29, 2007, longtime Abbey employee, neighbor and friend, Harold "Harry" Lager, formally of Maryville, Mo. died. May he rest in peace.

As Tower Topics goes to press, Conception Abbey has been evacuated due to a severe winter weather ice storm. Expect a follow up in the next Tower Topics or online.
