Good and faithful friends

Abbot Gregory Polan, O.S.B.Dear Friends,

Greetings of peace from Conception Abbey.

“Well done, my good and faithful servant . . . Come, share your master’s joy” (Matthew 25:21). Those words of Jesus are the deepest hope of each and every one of us. In this passage from St. Matthew’s gospel, Jesus addresses these words to the servant who had been given five talents and who had returned ten to his master. This passage is about good stewardship, using our God-given gifts well, returning to God what was first given to us for our use.

As the monks of Conception Abbey bring to a successful conclusion their Capital Campaign, A Living Tradition, it is an occasion for us to thank you most sincerely for the contributions you have made to our apostolic endeavors. We believe that the stewardship which God has given us to live as monastic witnesses to the primacy of prayer, to prepare men for the priesthood, to spread the Good News of the Gospel through the printed word and Christian greeting cards, to welcome guests as Christ, and to serve in parishes and chaplaincies is seen by you as worthy of your continued support. In this way, we do our part in the building of the Kingdom of God, affirmed by the belief that our labors bear fruit in the lives of many people. It is a source of genuine joy to know that our lives serve others in ways that make a difference.

Belief in the importance of stewardship in the life of each follower of Christ is a posture of faith. Taking stewardship seriously means that we understand that everything we receive, indeed every thing, comes to us from God. With these blessings, we are in turn stewards of God’s many and varied gifts to the human family. When we use these gifts wisely, generously, and faithfully for the well being of others, we return to God what he has given us. Whether in our own families, in our neighborhoods, in our churches, in our nation or in lands beyond its borders, there is great need and each of us can take part in building a world where God’s gifts are understood to be precisely that – blessings shared for the good of all.

Thank you to the many benefactors who have contributed to A Living Tradition. Your contributions enable us to keep alive, vibrant and hopeful that tradition of prayer, education, formation, hospitality, and service. Each day the Conventual Mass is offered for the intentions of our benefactors, family members, and friends. Be assured that your goodness to us is foremost in our hearts and minds. We are ever grateful for all you have done to help us.

In this issue of Tower Topics we share with you the blessings of the campaign, and our hopes for our future as workers in the vineyard of the Lord. You, our benefactors, have contributed so generously in our stewardship, and we hope this good news will interest you and affirm that you have made a difference. Let these words be the first echo of that phrase we all hope to hear from our Lord some day: “Well done, my good and faithful servant . . . Come, share your master’s joy.”

Sincerely in Christ,
