Abbey NotesABBOT GREGORY POLAN published an article in the Summer 2004 issue of Liturgical Ministry, entitled, "Preaching at the Easter Vigil: The Paschal Mystery in the Old Testament Texts." In September he attended the International Congress of Abbots in Rome, a gathering of Benedictine abbots from around the world that meets every four years at the Benedictine Athenaeum of Sant' Anselmo in Rome. * * *In September PRIOR KENNETH REICHERT spoke to a class of prisoners at the Maryville Treatment Center on his experiences of being a victim of violence. The class entitled "Impact of Crime on Victims" is sponsored by the center's Office of Probation and Parole. * * *ABBOT MARCEL ROONEY directed a retreat June 1-4 at the Spiritual Life Center for the priests of the Diocese of Salina. It was entitled "Theology of the Priesthood, Source of Priestly Spirituality." He also presented the same retreat June 14-19 to the priests of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, Utah. Other summer activities included directing "The Spirit of Monastic Formation," a retreat for the Benedictine Sisters of Oak Forest, Ill., July 5-8, and serving as principal celebrant and homilist at a July 16 Mass celebrating the sesquicentennial of St. Meinrad Archabbey at St. Meinrad, Ind. Abbot Marcel in September directed "The Eucharistic Sacrifice and Banquet," a retreat for the cloistered Carmelite sisters of Sioux City, Iowa, and taught adult catechism sessions on "The Eucharist, Understood, Celebrated and Lived," at St. Rose of Lima parish in Savannah, Mo. He concluded the month teaching a session on "The Spirituality of the Presider" for the priests of the Diocese of Columbus, in Columbus, Ohio. * * *FATHER ADAM RYAN in September preached annual retreats for the Pope John Paul I Council of the Knights of Columbus of Parkville, Mo., and for the diaconate community of the Diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph. On Sept. 26 he preached at the Sunday services of Jacob's Well in Kansas City's Westport area. In October he preached a women's retreat for St. John parish in Adel, Iowa, and another retreat for a small group of priests from the Diocese of Rochester, N.Y. In November he will address the Missouri Retired Teachers Association in Maryville, Mo., and in December will preach the annual retreat for the Knights of Columbus of Smithville, Mo. In December, Father Adam will receive a Master of Arts degree from Creighton University. From Nov. 29 through Dec. 6 Father Adam will preach an Advent retreat for the monks from St. Gabriel Benedictine Priory in Des Moines, Iowa. * * *The professional nursing staff of St. Stephen Infirmary has participated in two continuing education events. In April, Director of Health Care Services BROTHER JONATHAN CLARK and Assistant Director of Health Care Services CAROL MADDEN learned about new aspects of care for the elderly at the Jugan Center, operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, in south Kansas City, Mo.
