Alumni Reunion set for September 20-21

Dr. Luvern Gubbels of Des Moines, Iowa, and Msgr. James Hake of the Diocese of Salina will receive the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service at the 2002 Alumni Reunion Sept. 20-21.

Dr. Luvern Gubbels           Msgr. James Hake

The reunion, which will begin with registration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, will include a 3 p.m. lecture on church, society and spirituality, by Franciscan Father Joseph Chinnici of the Franciscan School of Theology at Berkley, Calif. Father Joseph is a widely respected scholar, teacher and speaker on the history of American Catholicism. His mentor at Oxford University was theologian John Tracey Ellis.

Mass and the presentation of awards will follow Father Joseph’s address. Then, there will be a social hour, banquet and evening reception.

Dr. Gubbels, a 36-year veteran of Catholic education, received his bachelor’s degree from Conception Seminary College in 1966. He is currently superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Des Moines. He was previously director of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Winona and held several principal and teaching positions in the Archdiocese of Omaha. He was twice president of the Omaha Archdiocesan Elementary Principals Association. His wife of 34 years, Joyce, has been principal of St. Pius X/St. Leo Grade School in Omaha for the past 20 years.

Msgr. Hake attended high school, college and theology studies at Conception from 1948 through 1960. He currently is rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina and vicar general for the Diocese of Salina. He also serves as director of the Propagation of the Faith and defender of the bond for the diocesan tribunal. An amateur woodworker, who also enjoys leading pilgrimages to Italy and France, Msgr. Hake has held numerous pastorates while simultaneously serving in the administration of his diocese.

Of special note, several alumni from classes marking graduation anniversaries, are making concerted efforts to gather their classmates for the reunion.

Steve Clarke and Ed Littig are working to rally the college class of 1967. Greg Eufinger and Father Peter Ullrich are coordinating the college class of 1972. And Msgr. Paul Connelly is inquiring about gathering members of the high school class of 1942.

For more information on the reunion or to receive help in contacting classmates, please contact Father Peter Ullrich, alumni director, at (660) 944-2875, or send an e-mail to: alumni@conception.edu.
