Abbey Trails draws 129 runners, walkers

The 6th Annual Abbey Trails 5K run and two-mile walk drew 129 runners and walkers April 28 and raised $3,300 for the Conception Seminary College Wellness Program.

Brian Jenkins, a student from the University of Kansas Newman Center, was the overall winner in the men’s category, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 17:25, followed by Father Dennis Schmitz, vocation director of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, at 17:40.

The women’s overall winner was Heather Robertson of Maryville, who finished at 22:43, followed by Korena Sundell, also of Maryville, at 23:09.

In the two-mile walk participants estimated their completion time before the event and then tried to finish closest to that time. Nola Zeltwanger of St. Joseph won the women’s competition, missing her time by only .04 seconds. Steve Sherry of Ravenwood won the men’s event, missing his time by 30 seconds. Kevin Luke of Stanberry was a close second, missing his time by 32 seconds.

The money from Abbey Trails will help fund the Wellness Program, which was created in 1987 to support positive health practices in the seminary and surrounding communities by teaching the skills needed for physical, emotional and spiritual well being. The program is open to the public and offers racquetball, aerobics, water aerobics, swimming, weight training and other activities.

This year’s event drew 80 people for the two-mile walk and 49 for the run. Participants enjoyed a lunch, a tour of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the top three finishers in various age groups received prizes.

Next year’s Abbey Trails is scheduled for April 20.
