Abbey Trails raises more than $5,000 for wellness

On a sunny but cool spring day, 170 runners and walkers participated in the 11th Annual Abbey Trails 5K run and two-mile walk April 8 at Conception Abbey. The event raised $5,355 for the Conception Seminary College Wellness Program.

Abbey Trails 2006
At the starter’s gun, the 11th Annual Abbey Trails 5K run was under way. Participants in the 2-mile walk trod a different path this year. Because of soggy conditions around Lake Placid, the event instead traversed the walking trail laid
out by the late Brother Damian Larson.

John Kilonzo Kasoa of Maryville was the overall winner in the men’s category for this year, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 18:32, followed in second place by Novice Andrew Sheller of Conception Abbey at 19:11.

The women’s overall winner was Karla Schroff of Roeland Park, Kan., who finished at 24:10, followed by Erica Mejia of Kansas City, Mo., at 24:30.

In the two-mile walk, participants estimated their completion time before the event and then tried to finish closest to that time.

The money from Abbey Trails will help fund the Wellness Program, which was created in 1987 to support positive health practices in the seminary and surrounding communities by teaching the skills needed for physical, emotional and spiritual well being. The program is open to the public and offers racquetball, aerobics, water aerobics and swimming, weight training and other activities.

This year, Abbey Trails participants were able to relax inside St. Raphael Hall where Conception Seminary College was hosting an art show.

This year’s event drew 105 people for the two-mile walk and 65 for the run. Participants enjoyed a lunch and the top three finishers in various age groups received prizes.

The age-group winners in the men’s 5K were: Kyle McLaughlin (13 and under); Patrick Jennings (14-19); Andrew Sheller (20-29); Brian Elston (30-39); Harley Nash (40-49); Larry Davison (50-59); Stephen Schroff (60-69).

The age-group winners in the women’s 5K were: Lauren Sheil (13 and under); Nicole Miller (20-29); Erica Mejia (30-39); Sally Northcutt (40-49); and Donna Romans (50-59).

The age-group winners in the men’s 2-mile walk were: Shelby Lager (13 and under); Justin Hartwell (20-29); Gary Sherman (30-39); Mike Cunningham (40-49); Rob Dowis (50-59); Ken Madden (60-69).

The age-group winners in the women’s 2-mile walk were: Patricia Evans (13 and under); Hailey Newton (14-19); Kelli Harrison (20-29); Paula McCrea (30-39); Carol Rohrer (40-49); Emma Bridger (50-59); Sharon Conrad-Neustadter (60-69); and Helen Gorsuch (70 and over).

Charles “Duke” Kemper, 87, of Conception, was honored as the grand marshall this year. He has participated in the event every year since its inception and is the oldest participant.

Next year’s Abbey Trails is scheduled for April 21, 2007.
