Alumni mark calendars for milestone reunion

Fireworks will hail the centennial of the Conception Seminary College Alumni Association at this year’s Alumni Reunion Sept. 22-23.

An evening fireworks display will follow the opening day’s events. The reunion will begin at 3 p.m. with an alumni forum, followed by Mass, a banquet and an evening social. There will also be new Conception Seminary College Alumni Directories available at this year’s reunion. The alumni of the Archdiocese of Omaha will again be providing a cigar and scotch tent during the reunion.

This year’s Alumni Award for Distinguished Service will be presented to Bishop William Dendinger of the Diocese of Grand Island and Dr. William J. Hynes, president of St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis.

Bishop William DendingerBishop Dendinger, who graduated from Conception Seminary in 1961, is a priest of the Archdiocese of Omaha, where he was pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr Church in Omaha before being appointed bishop of Grand Island in 2004.

Much of Bishop Dendinger’s four decades as a priest were served as a military chaplain.

During his 31 years of military ser-vice he was a base chaplain, cadet wing chaplain, a member of the chaplain resource board for the United States Air Force Chaplain Institute, plans and programs officer in the Office of the Air Force Chief of Chaplain Service and finally chief of the Air Force Chaplain Services. He retired in 2001 as a two-star general.

Dr. William J. HynesDr. Hynes, who graduated from Conception in 1962, went on to a distinguished career in higher education. In 2000 he was named president of St. Norbert College. Before that for 10 years he served as academic vice president and taught religious studies at St. Mary’s College of California. After completing his studies at Conception, Dr. Hynes earned advanced degrees from Marquette University and the University of Chicago. He taught religious studies at St. Regis and St. Xavier Universities and was a National Endowment for the Humanities visiting fellow at the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Hynes is the author of three books and numerous articles and presentations in the areas of religious history and thought, ecumenical and religious studies and academic administration. He has earned several fellowships, grants and awards, including Administrator of the Year at Regis University, and a fellowship to study in the Vatican archives.
