Breezes blow in more than 180 for Abbey Trails

Runners react to the starting gun for the Abbey Trails 5K Run.
Breezy but beautiful weather greeted the 183 runners and walkers who participated in the 10th Annual Abbey Trails 5K run and two-mile walk April 9 at Conception Abbey. The event raised $5,945 for the Conception Seminary College Wellness Program.

5K overall men's winner Chris Ronan crosses the finish line well ahead of the field.
Chris Ronan of Lenexa, Kan., turned in the fastest time in the men’s 5K run, finishing in 16:20, followed in second place by John Kilonzo Kasoa of Maryville.
The women’s overall winner was Veronica Braddy of Mission, Kan, who finished in 25:07, followed by Kelly Quinlin of Maryville.
In the two-mile walk participants estimated their completion time before the event and then tried to finish closest to that time.

Participants in the 2-mile walk make their way around Lake Placid
The money from Abbey Trails will help fund the Wellness Program, which was created in 1987 to support positive health practices in the seminary and surrounding communities by teaching the skills needed for physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The program is open to the public and offers racquetball, aerobics, water aerobics and swimming, weight training and other fitness opportunities.
This year’s event drew 113 people for the two-mile walk and 70 for the run. Participants enjoyed a lunch, a tour of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the top three finishers in each age group received prizes.
