Abbey Notes
ABBOT GREGORY POLAN spoke in March at the Heartland Conference in
Kansas City, Mo. His topic was "Jesus' Invitation to Freedom:
Forgiveness and Reconciliation." Also in March he presented a paper
entitled, "Reading Isaiah 56-66: An Introduction" to the members of the
Old Testament Biblical Colloquium, and he addressed the members of the
Serra Club of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas on the growth of
CSC's enrollment and the increase of vocations to the monastic community
at Conception.

FATHER PATRICK CAVEGLIA directed a day of recollection Feb. 29 for the
Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict in Huntington, N.Y. He also taught a
series of classes on Catholic social teaching and The Rule of
Benedict.

FATHER ALBERT BRUECKEN addressed a confirmation class Feb. 11 at St. James
parish in St. Joseph, Mo. He conducted the abbey's Monastic Experience,
for eight college-age men March 13-17 with assistance from BROTHER PACHOMIUS
MEADE. Father Albert celebrated a Young Adult Mass for young adult
Catholics March 18 at Holy Spirit parish in Overland Park, Kan. And June
4 he attended the ordination of alumni Kirk Larkin and Rex Arnold in
Oklahoma City.

FATHER ADAM RYAN, choirmaster, received continuing education in Gregorian
chant Jan. 11-18 at St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Feb. 20-23 he
preached a retreat for 60 people at the Spiritual Life Center in
Wichita, Kan. The retreat, "The Way of Benedict for Everyday and
Everyone," included among its participants parents of priest alumni and
current students of Conception Seminary College. He returned to the
center March 29-April 2 to direct a retreat for "new" priests - ordained
for five years or less - of the diocese.
Feb. 28-29 Father Adam preached the annual retreat for the St. Thomas
Knights of Columbus, Indianola, Iowa.
Father Adam preached a parish mission March 8-10 at St. Bridget parish
in Pleasant Hill, Mo., where oblate and CSC alumnus Father Joseph
Cisetti is pastor. Father Adam also preached a Lenten retreat March 15
for the parishioners of St. Gabriel the Archangel parish in Kansas City,
Mo., where Conception's Father Karl Barmann is pastor.

BROTHER JACOB KUBAJAK won the "Puzzler" trivia game on the popular
National Public Radio program, Car Talk. For deciphering a
puzzler too long and convoluted for this space, he received a $26 gift
certificate from the Car Talk Shameless Commerce Division, which he
redeemed for two coffee cups with the inscription, "Unencumbered by the
Thought Process."
"That's my new motto," he says.

BROTHER ELIAS ZACZKIEWICZ attended the national meeting of the Institute
on Religious Life April 16-18 at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago.

BROTHER PACHOMIUS MEADE attended the Kansas Catholic College Student
Conference Feb. 20-22 in Manhattan, Kan., and on Feb. 27 attended the
St. James Parish Vocation Day in St. Joseph, Mo. Brother Pachomius in
March also attended a 6th-grade Vocation Day at St. Mary parish in
Des Moines, Iowa, and a Vocation Day at Benedictine College, Atchison, Kan.

Since December students from Jill Baker's 5th-grade class at St.
Gregory School in nearby Maryville have volunteered regularly at
Conception Abbey, raking leaves, packing rosaries and rosary cards for
shipment to parishes, schools and individuals, and making cards and
decorations for residents of St. Stephen Infirmary.

ROY HAAS, Printery House director of sales and marketing, and sales
representatives BROTHER JEREMIAH TUTTLE and PEGGY OSBORN attended the
Catholic Marketing Network tradeshow Feb. 11-13 in Long Beach, Calif.
Brother Jeremiah and Haas were joined by BROTHER BLAISE BONDERER and
BROTHER JOHN BAPTIST VALENZUELA at the Los Angeles Religious Educational
Congress Feb. 20-22 in Anaheim, Calif.
