Public invited to dedication of new Welcome Center
he mountain of dirt is gone. The iron rebar is no longer visible.
Brick walls and new glass windows are in place. The plumbing and wiring
have passed inspection. Furniture has been ordered. But the essence of
Conception Abbey’s new Welcome Center is still missing – people.
After two years of the A Living Tradition capital campaign and less than
a year of construction, the monks of Conception Abbey welcome the public
to the dedication of the Welcome Center at 2 p.m. May 2.
“This building is a wonderful symbol,” Abbot Gregory said. “It
represents the generous and prayerful support of thousands of friends
and benefactors. It is a tangible reminder of what Christian people can
accomplish when they come together in a spirit of community and
gratitude to God. And its very presence is a profound statement of
Conception Abbey’s commitment to the ministry of hospitality.”
The ceremony will begin with a blessing by Abbot Gregory and a
ribbon-cutting followed by a reception and tours of the facility.
The building houses a guest reception center, a book store and Printery
House gift shop on the main floor, business and facilities offices on
the lower level, and the offices of Development, Communications, Major
and Planned Gifts, and Alumni on the top floor. It is the first of two
major projects being funded by the campaign. Next up is a major
renovation of St. Maur Hall, Conception Seminary College’s 102-year-old
main administration and classroom building. The design and
construction/renovation of both buildings will cost $8.1 million, of
which $1 million remains to be raised (see Abbey asks...).
“We are seeing the first concrete results of our dreams, plans and hard
work,” Abbot Gregory said.
“This is an important event for the monks of the abbey,” Brother Cyprian
Langlois, director of the Abbey Center for Prayer and Ministry, said of
the grand opening. “After all, this building was constructed to serve
the many people who come to us each day and support our mission. This is
an opportunity to relax, thank them and celebrate.”
