A Good Read...
Occasionally in Tower Topics, a member of the Conception Abbey
and Conception Seminary College community is asked to recommend a book.
This issue’s reader is Amy Schieber.
The Poisonwood Bible
by Barbara Kingsolver
“This is an engaging book about a domineering and driven Baptist
missionary who takes his family to the Congo to convert the people there
to Christianity. The story is told in different chapters from the points
of view of his wife and daughters. The book not only tells a powerful
story of the tragedy that results from the missionary’s arrogance, but
it also presents a picture of the life, politics and brewing unrest of
the Congo in the mid-1950s.”
Mrs. Schieber is Conception Seminary College’s director of
administration, and a fan of biographies and historical fiction. “When I
get into a book I go into my own world,” she says. “But that can be a
drawback. Sometimes I find myself sitting and reading when I should be
doing the laundry or emptying the dishwasher. Those things end up on
hold until I’m done with my book.”
