Abbey Notes
In October, Abbot Gregory Polan presented a workshop on Lectio Divina to
the Buffalo Bible School in the Diocese of Buffalo. There were over 200
participants for the sessions. He published the article “Passing the
Prophetic Mantle: The Call of Elisha,” for the November-December issue
of The Bible Today. He also wrote “Lectio Divina: Reading and Praying
the Word of God” for the Fall 2003 issue of Liturgical Ministry.

Abbot Marcel Rooney on Sept. 1 served as translator (from Italian to
English) for a conference given by an Italian priest at St. Patrick
parish in Kansas City, Mo.
On Oct. 26 he preached at the celebration of his confrere Fr. Reginald
Sanders’ 40th anniversary of ordination at St. Paul parish, Tarkio, Mo.,
and blessed the parish’s new stained glass front window. Oct 31-Nov 2,
Abbot Marcel directed a retreat for the students and faculty of Magdalen
College, Warner, New Hampshire.
Throughout October and November Abbot Marcel held four conferences for
the monastic community at Conception on the new General Instruction on
the Roman Missal, as well as one for the Franciscan sisters in Savannah,
and for the parish of St. Rose in Savannah. On Nov. 17 he
presented conferences (on the Fortieth Anniversary of the Promulgation
of the Liturgy Constitution of the Second Vatican Council) for the
Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Omaha at the Benedictine
Mission House in Schuyler, Neb.
During Advent, Abbot Marcel directed a day of recollection for the
Franciscan sisters in Savannah, and Jan. 2-7 he directed a retreat in
Tucson, Ariz., for the bishops of Region XIII, which includes Wyoming,
Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.

Father Xavier Nacke attended the annual meeting of the Federation of
Seminary Spiritual Directors, in Emmitsburg, Md., Oct. 23-26. The topic
of the meeting of some 45 spiritual directors from the U.S. and Canada
was “Issues of Celibacy in Spiritual Direction.”

Father Albert Bruecken, abbey vocation director,
directed students on “Busy Student” retreats Oct. 5-10 at the St.
Lawrence Catholic Campus Center at the University of Kansas in Lawrence,
and in November at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Campus Center at Iowa
State University in Ames, and at the University of Missouri Newman
Center in Columbia. He was spiritual director Oct. 17-20 for an
“Awakenings Retreat” at Laurie, Mo. He will participate March 5 in a
6th-Grade Vocation Day at Magdalen parish in Wichita, Kan.

Father Patrick Caveglia Nov. 14-19 was one of three visitators
conducting the canonical visitation of Mount Angel Abbey in St.
Benedict, Ore. Every four years each monastery in the Swiss-American
Congregation conducts a self-study of the community’s spiritual,
intellectual and financial well-being. Then a team of visiting monks
from other communities conducts interviews with each member and reports
to the entire community the concerns that arose in the interviews. The
visitation team for Mount Angel was led by Abbot Vincent Bataille of
Marmion Abbey in Illinois.

Father Adam Ryan in October preached the annual retreat for the men’s
group at Mary Immaculate Heart parish in Ankeny, Iowa, and was a
featured speaker at “The Altar,” an interdenominational youth event in LaCynge, Kan. Based on the youth ministry of the famed ecumenical
community in Taizé, France, the event featured dance troupes, musical
ensembles, and displays by graphic and manual artists. It was sponsored
by Youth Front, an ecumenical ministry from Shawnee Mission, Kan. In
November he preached the annual renewal retreat for the Kansas and
Missouri chapters of the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales at the
Franciscan Prayer Center in Independence, Mo.

Brother William Buchholz, director of the Printery House, along with
Roy Haas, director of sales and marketing, and Brother Jeremiah, sales and
marketing representative, are attending the Los Angeles Religious Education
Congress tradeshow in February.
Brother Jeremiah and Peggy Osborn, sales, marketing, and customer
service representative, attended the Dallas Gift Show in January.
