Rev. Nicholas John Becker (H26-27, C31), 91, brother of Benedictine Father Luke Becker, died Aug. 20, 2003 in Algona, Iowa.

Nadean Bertalott, mother of Matthew Richard Bertalott (C70-72), died Oct. 10 in Springfield, Mo.

Lowell Lynn Caffey, father of David Caffey (C67-68), died Sept. 3 in Springfield, Mo.

Thomas Carbone (H49-51) died Dec. 15, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Marvin DuMars (H51-52) died Sept. 1 in Parsons, Kan.

Most Reverend James E. Fitzgerald (C67-60, T60-64) died Sept. 11 in Joliet, Ill.

Kenneth M. Fox, father of Brian Fox (C94-98), died Nov. 2, in Omaha, Neb.

Kent Gleason, father of Rev. Jack Gleason (PT89-91), died Sept. 12 in Blackwell, Okla.

Mary Margaret Gordon, mother of Rev. Robert Gordon (C67-69; T69-72), died Oct. 8 in New Jersey.

Msgr. Robert Hupp (C31-32; T32-34), 88, former director of Boys Town, died Aug. 31 in Mausten, Wis.

Jean Ann Clary, sister of John Clary (C65-67), William Clary (C67-68) and Rev. Michael Clary (C68-73), died Oct. 18 in Hunstville, Ala.

Dr. Michael F. Manley (H22-24, C24-26), 99, died Sept. 6 in Citrus Heights, Calif. Dr. “Doc” Manley taught philosophy at Conception 1962-1969. His wife Joyce was a secretary in the college and public relations office for several years.

Rev. James McCaslin, brother of Rev. John McCaslin (H46-47; C47-51) and Rev. Patrick McCaslin (C53-57), died Sept. 16 in Omaha, Neb.

Frank McSorley, father of Rev. Aidan McSorley (C59-64; T64-70), died Oct. 5 in Maryville, Mo.

Sophia J. Ostrowski, mother of Andrew Ostrowski (C63-65), died Sept. 22 in Ozark, Mo.

Mary A. “Aggie” Rieger, wife of Frank A. Rieger (C60-62; T62-65), died Feb. 21, 2003 in Kansas City, Mo.

Lyle J. TeBockhorst (C66-67) died Feb. 15, 2003, in Illinois.
Harvey D. Towner, father of Thomas Towner (C68-70; T70-72), died Oct. 26 in Gilbert, Ariz.

Blossom Ver Ert, wife of deceased alumnus Lambert Van Ert (H36-37), died in September in Wichita, Kan.

James W. Warner (C58-63) died July 10, 2003 in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Rev. James L. Weeke (C51) died Dec. 10 in Omaha, Neb.

Archbishop Ignatius J. Strecker, former archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, and longtime supporter of Conception Abbey, died Oct. 16. A native of the Diocese of Wichita, Archbishop Strecker was a classmate at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis of Conception alumnus Father Emil Kapaun (H30-32; C32-36), who is being promoted for sainthood.


Ordinations
Bro. Thomas Nguyen, CMC (C93-97) ordained transitional deacon Oct. 11 for the Congregation of Mother Coredemptrix in Carthage, Mo.

Shawn Ratigan (C96-2000) and Joseph Totton (C97-2000) ordained transitional deacons for the diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph Nov. 15 at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago.

Dan Hoehn (C97-2000) ordained transitional deacon Nov. 7 for the Diocese of Joliet.

Births
Keith Jiron (PT91-93) and his wife Kate welcomed their first child, Andrew Joseph Sotoku Jiron, Nov. 21 in Kansas City, Kan.

Jon Schnieders (C85-88) and his wife Tia welcomed Jude Patterson Schnieders Sept. 25 in Lenexa, Kan.

Varia
Rev. Vincent M. Albano, SOLT (T65-67), is the vicar-general priest servant for the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity in Robstown, Tex.

Rev. James Cain (H45-48; C48-52) of the Archdiocese of Omaha received the title “monsignor” Nov. 21. Monsignor Cain was ordained in 1956, served at several parishes, and for 14 years was chancellor of the Archdiocese. He was also an archdiocesan consultor and served on the Metropolitan Tribunal. He retired in 2002.

Bro. William Dokulil, OSB (PT1994) made his solemn profession as a monk of Mt. Michael Abbey, Elkhorn, Neb. Jan. 11.

George Q. Evans (C64-65; T65-68), who has practiced law in Jackson, Miss. since 1970, has served as past president and current chairman of the board of his firm. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and in the American Board of Trial Advocates. He and his wife Carol have two grown daughters, Jennifer, a Jackson lawyer, and Ann, a writer and teacher in Oxford, Miss.

Rev. Tim Haberkorn (C85-88), pastor of St. Joseph parish, Olpe, Kan., and St. Mary parish in Hartford, was featured in The Leaven, newspaper of the archdiocese. A longtime collector of relics of saints, his current collection includes more than 240. Last July he traveled to Pamplona, Spain, and participated in the annual running of the bulls. He completed the run without injury.

Brother Linh Hoang, OFM (C90-91) is finishing a doctorate in historical theology at Fordham University, and has entered the novitiate of the East Coast Franciscans.

Rev. David Korth (C85-88) realized a longtime goal of participating in ministry to American Indians when he was appointed pastor of three communities, St. Augustine parish, Winnebago, Neb., St. Joseph Parish, Walthill, Neb., and Mission of Our Lady of Fatima, Macy, Neb. He was recently featured in the Norfolk Daily News.

Alberto Montoya-Fraga (LCC2000-2002) has entered the novitiate of the Capuchins of the Mid-America Province.

Timothy Smith (C90-93) last August completed his Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) at Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. He is currently working as a membership associate with the American Theological Library Association in Chicago.

Sgt. Joshua Stengel (PT2002-2003) is currently serving with Company C, 489th Engineer Battalion, in Iraq. He withdrew from CSC when his unit was mobilized in January 2003. He recently relinquished a two-week Christmas leave so a fellow soldier could spend Christmas with his wife and three young children.

Rev. Kevin Weber (C86-88), pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, Hays, Kan., recorded “His, the Season,” a CD collection of 20 Christmas songs to raise money for the parish building fund and to support parish ministries.

The family of Henry “Hank” Wertin Jr. (C1996-2000), Matthew Wertin (C1998-2001) and current seminarian Mark Wertin was featured in the August 2003 issue of Extension Magazine. Hank Sr. and Mary Beth Wertin have 10 children. The article explored the family’s evident faith. Hank Sr. was among the first group of permanent deacons in the Diocese of Pueblo.

Jeremy Wind (C2000-2003) is working with the Catholic Worker House in Houston, Tex. The Houston Catholic Worker newspaper in its November-December issue, carried an interview Wind conducted with fellow CSC alumnus, An (Andy) Phan (C2001-02). Phan discussed the challenges faced by immigrants to the U.S. and described the rich culture of the Vietnamese people. Phan is in his second year of theology at Mt. Saint Mary’s, Emmitsburg, Maryland.
