Web site provides instruction
on the Rule
There are about 500 oblates who are affiliated with Conception Abbey. We are proud of our oblates and
happy to have so many praying with us and for us. And of course the oblates are always remembered in the
daily prayers of the monks.
Some oblates have mentioned to me since I became associate director of oblates this past summer that
they would like to receive more instruction on the Rule of St. Benedict and the spirituality of
the oblate life. Certainly, it would be ideal if all oblates could come to the abbey once or twice a
year in order to receive such instruction, but our oblates are scattered all throughout the country.
So it is impossible for many to come to Conception on any regular basis or for us to go to them.
However, I would like to encourage the oblates to use our Web site. If you have a computer and Internet
access, go to www.conceptionabbey.org.
Then scroll down and click on the “Oblates”
link. There you will find something about the oblates as well as a number of links to other sites that
contain valuable information and instructions on Benedictine spirituality and Benedictine life. I
recommend them and hope you will find them helpful.
You will also find a link to Father Xavier Nacke’s suggested spiritual reading list. Father Xavier, the
spiritual director of our seminary, has gathered recommended books from several people, including monks
of the abbey and faculty members of the seminary. Our oblates are encouraged to add to the list by
recommending books that they’ve found helpful or inspiring.
Recommendations can be sent by e-mail to

or by mail to the Communications Office, P.O. Box 501, Conception, MO 64433. Please include your address
and phone number.
We also plan to provide an occasional article on our Web site, written specifically for the Oblates of
Conception Abbey. We invite oblates to submit articles for publication as well. I cannot guarantee they
will be published, but they certainly will be considered.
