Faculty FootnotesFather Dan Merz led the annual retreat for Catholic school principals in the Jefferson City diocese Sept. 24. He also led a liturgy workshop for parish ministers at Christ the King parish in Des Moines, Iowa, Nov. 18-19, and a similar workshop for the Shrine of St. Patrick parish in Laurie, Mo., Dec. 16. Father Merz led a retreat for teachers at the Catholic grade school in Columbia, Mo., Jan. 15. ***Father Duane F. Reinert, OFM Cap. co-authored with Dr. John P. Allen a critical review article titled “The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test: An Update of Research Findings,” which has been accepted for publication in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. It should be in print later this spring. The article summarizes research on the alcohol screening scale over the past five years and updates an article Fr. Duane and Dr. Allen published in the same journal in Feb. 2002. ***Father Xavier Nacke, seminary director of spiritual formation, attended a meeting of the Federation of Seminary Spiritual Directors in Los Altos, Calif., Oct. 27-30. ***Encounter With God's Call, a weekend experience of seminary life for juniors and seniors in high school, was November 11th-13th, drawing 27 participants from 10 dioceses. ***Father Benedict Neenan, president-rector and Father Samuel Russell, dean of students, attended a conference of the National Association of College Seminaries at Seton Hall University last May 30-June 2. The topic was internal and external forum issues in college seminary formation. ***Last summer, Father Samuel made his 16th visit to Lithuania, where he continues to work by Vatican appointment with two Benedictine sisters' communities there. In September, he traveled to Schaumburg, Ill., for a convocation of personnel from both college seminaries and schools of theology sponsored by the Seminary Department of the National Catholic Educational Association. The topic was "Ministry and Formation of Priests in a Time of Change and Renewal." ***Father Benedict Neenan and Brother Victor Schinstock attended the NCDVD (National Conference for Diocesan Vocation Directors) in Minneapolis September 22-27. Father Benedict gave a talk March 7 at Visitation Parish, Kansas City, Mo., on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. ***Brother Justin Hernandez, philosophy professor, received an NEH grant to participate in a three-week research seminar in Latin American thought at the University of Buffalo in New York. The focus of the seminar was different approaches to identity formation for Hispanics who immigrate to the United States. Brother Justin presented a paper on the role of religion in Cuban American identity. ***Dr. Christopher Anadale has been elected chairman of the Philosophy Department. During the summer, he also attended faculty development conferences sponsored by The Teaching Professor newsletter and by the James Madison Program at Princeton University. |
