Faculty FootnotesBrother Justin Hernandez, professor of philosophy, participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities institute on “Science and Values” June 23-25 at the University of Pittsburgh. * * * In preparation for Conception Seminary College’s upcoming reaccredidation, Dr. Elizabeth McGrath attended a conference of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association April 12-14.* * * Father Dan Merz, professor of theology and classical languages, on Palm Sunday led a day of recollection for RCIA candidates at St. Mary parish in Pella, Iowa.In June his article, “A Dignified Eucharist,” was published in an issue of Liturgical Ministry dedicated to a study of the new General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) published last year. His article is a study of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, comparing the previous edition of the GIRM with the new version. Father Merz was spiritual director for a Teens Encounter Christ weekend retreat June 21-23 in Jefferson City, Mo., and for an Engaged Encounter Aug. 1-3. He also led the St. Thomas Seminary Alumni retreat in Edina, Mo., Aug. 9-10. * * * Father Benedict Neenan, president-rector, and Father Samuel Russell, dean of students, attended the National Catholic Education Association annual meeting in St. Louis, April 22-24. They also attended the National Association of College Seminaries (NACS) annual meeting May 26-29 at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago. From May 12 through June 12 they made their annual tour of dioceses served by Conception Seminary College to meet with bishops and vocation directors.* * * Father Samuel Russell made his 13th annual trip to Lithuania over the summer. Father Samuel, who is of Lithuanian descent, is the Holy See’s religious assistant for the Benedictine sisters in Lithuania.* * * Capuchin Father Duane Reinert, director of Counseling Services, on May 3 attended a workshop entitled “Supervising Counselors for Licensure in Missouri.”* * * Dr. Lance Richey, professor of philosophy, edited and annotated the book “Lenin as Philosopher: A Critical Examination of the Philosophical Basis of Leninism,” by Anton Pannekoek. Dr. Richey also wrote the book’s introduction.* * * Father Bill Whelan, a priest of the Archdiocese of Omaha serving as a seminary spiritual director, attended the Institute for Priestly Formation workshop for spiritual directors at Creighton University over the summer. |
